Quasar - galaxy associations ?

چکیده
There is controversy about the measurement of statistical associations between bright quasars and faint, presumably foreground galaxies. We look at the distribution of galaxies around an unbiased sample of 63 bright, moderate redshift quasars using a new statistic based on the separation of the quasar and its nearest neighbour galaxy. We nd a signiicant excess of close neighbours at separations less than about 10 arcsec which we attribute to the magniication by gravitational lensing of quasars which would otherwise be too faint to be included in our sample. About one quarter to one third of the quasars are so aaected although the allowed error in this fraction is large.

A further discussion on quasar-galaxy associations from gravitational lensing
Quasar-galaxy associations, if they result from the effect of gravitational lensing by foreground galaxies, depend sensitively on the shape of the quasar number counts. Two kinds of quasar number-magnitude relations are predicted to produce quite different properties in quasar-galaxy associations: the counts of Boyle, Shanks and Peterson (1988; BSP) provide both positive and “negative” associat...
متن کاملEnvironmental Effect on the Associations of Background Quasars with Foreground Objects: I. Analytic Investigation
The associations of the angular positions of background quasars with foreground galaxies, clusters of galaxies and quasars are often attributed to the statistical lensing by gravitational potentials of the matter along the lines of sight, although it has been known that none of the individual objects (galaxies, clusters or quasars) are able to fully explain the reported amplitudes of the quasar...
متن کاملQuasar-Galaxy Associations from Gravitational Lensing: Revisited
The theoretically expected amplitude of the associations of background quasars with foreground galaxies as a result of gravitational lensing has been updated in this paper. Since the galactic matter alone yields an amplitude of quasar overdensity smaller than that observed, a special attention has been paid to the examination or re-examination of the uncertainties in the estimate of the quasar ...

متن کاملRedshift Components of Apparent Quasar-Galaxy Associations: A Parametric Model
The components that are known to physically contribute to an object’s observed redshift are reviewed. Then, using a postulated galactic ejection model for quasars, and previously derived results from electromagnetic scattering theory which have been experimentally verified, a parametric extrapolation of these redshift components is presented. The model shows that high quasar redshift magnitudes...
